Five Things Thursday

1. I haven't posted a lot about my running, cuz I've been trying to figure out my Rocky-Mountain-High Coach, and to start eating as directed, and figuring out how to manage my HR on the run and all that stuff.  But I've been running to plan about 4 to 5 times a week with a long run of 10k (6+ miles) every weekend.

2. One thing that has really shocked me is that it is very cold when I start running in the morning.  Ok, I threw in the "very" for my American readers.  It's chilly.  Today it was 6°C (42°F) with a 28 kph (19 mph) head wind.  I'm getting way too sweaty with two shirts on, so I'm running with my one long-sleeve technical.  I think light gloves are in order though.  My little finger tips are getting pretty frosty!  I can feel every sphincter in my body tensing up when I start out the door though!!

3. I've rented Saint Ralph.  Set in 1954, the movie tells a story of a 9-year-old boy who thinks winning the Boston Marathon will be a big enough miracle that it will cure his Mom who is dieing in the hospital.  Apparently the movie is written and directed by the 1985 winner of the Detroit Marathon and is supposed to be very realistic in terms of training and presentation of the running ethos.  I'll review it soon.

4. My thinking goes this way: if you can spring for a health club membership or even a personal trainer to boot, you should be able to spring for a running coach.  The biggest problem with that is that if you start seeing results - you're sorta hooked!  I think I am hooked!

5. The Leafs are at the top of their division, I am exercising regularly and loosing weight, the local elections have only serious candidates still in the race, the municipality has decided to lower taxes in our area, and work is getting less busy.  These things point to only one thing: the end of the world!  It was nice knowing you!  :D

Jack Nicholson looks so hot in that picture! Hot in a sexy way, of course.

Okay, so I'm kidding. But I love Jack anyway!

Could you please send some of your running mojo over here to Oregon? Pretty please? I could really use it right about now! :)

I think its real hard to dress accordingly for the outdoors once it gets cold.

I love hockey, my favorite sport, I am a huge fan of the Orignal Six, Leaf's are my second favorite team.

I love 5 things Thursday. Maybe thirty next week? I love your random bit posts.

I need a running coach.

That movie sounds like something I'd like, can't wait to hear what you think of it.

You forgot that Clarence Thomas' wife wants an apology from Anita Hill, 19 years later. Now the world is safe to end!!

I had a personal trainer for 3 years and had to give that up last December - my training's been in a funk since. Hum....

I loved Saint Ralph.
When I opened your post for a moment I got scared it was your picture after one of your chilly Canadian runs.
You have serious candidates in your elections? What's with you Canadians? All our candidates are comedians. Makes life more interesting. :) (May you live in interesting times - Chinese curse)
If you get a coach I will be totally envious (and so will probably be most of your followers).

I've heard good things about that movie, but I've never seen it.
Good luck with the cold weather! I've been running at lunchtime and it hasn't been that cold here during the day yet.
According to #5, it sounds like things are going well for you lately. Keep it up! :)

That movie sounds like it would have me bawling after about 5 minutes. Can't wait to read your review!

# 5 - Now where I need to come when I need a boost of optimism. Your blog.

# 3 Need to get my hands on that it sounds really good.

"every sphincter in my body" - multiple sphincters? You ARE special!

"trying to figure out my Rocky-Mountain-High Coach"? Jill is easy, just talk about knitting, does the trick every time.

Now you've got me self conscious about my use of the word "very". I don't think I use it very much but now I'm very curious to see. ;)
Congrats on the weight loss and hard training. Sounds like it's payin' off!

It IS getting cold and I also need to shop for fall/winter workout clothes. just moved here from a tropical country so I own mostly shorts and sleeveless tops!

That looks like a good movie. Will wait for your review =)

Your #2 - say WHAT? When it dips under 60 F, I am freezing and complaining. Of course, that always gives it away that I am from LA.

But I am amazed you run in that cold! Today I went out with my cold gear on for my 5 mile run and decided it was too cold, turned around, and went home to watch the rest of a true crime movie and drink my latte.

But now you have inspired me and I will make sure I get my run in tomorrow! :)

Dang I'm jealous. I think I have only one sphnicter. Are there more?

Yes. There are other sphincters in the body - oral, pharyngeal, upper and lower esophageal sphincters. :)

Stay warm running, Andrew!

Wait wait wait wait....hold the phone---"the municipality has decided to lower taxes in your area!" "Only serious candidates in the race"?! Wow, the world really is ending because Canada is acting smarter than the U.S. (I mean that with love).

I had a cool official Maple Leaf Jersey long ago given to me by a old boyfriend but when he went bye bye it went in the round file. Man I was dumb to always chuck everything I could of had a lot of loot by now :)

Nice work on the continues weight loss and regular exercise.

Sorry that is suppose to say continuous..........

Saint Ralph is a cute movie. My favorite "running" movie though, might be "Run Fat Boy, Run." I could watch it over and over :)

You will get used to the cooler temps...40 degrees is nothing:) Perfect running weather! This winter I will be getting out in below zero stuff...now that is cold!

Take care Andrew!

I still haven't figured out how to deal with this weather. I was wearing a long sleeved wicking shirt with a hoodie for a few weeks there, but now my evening runs leave me shivering for the first 5-10minutes!

I'm definitely going to check out Saint Ralph. Thx!

I used to be a huge hockey fan. I had season tix for the Rangers for years and was there when they won the cup. Then they went on strike and I never went back.

First, go Wings!

Second, what is this Five Things Thursday? I have seen this a couple times now on a couple blogs. Did I miss the memo?

That temperature I could handle... the wind, I could not. I am a wind and hill WIMP!

I never heard of Saint Ralph, it sounds really interesting.

I love hockey, you should turn this into a hockey blog. Hockey rules. BTW Andrew, you need to change the name of of your Blog. You are no longer a Wannabe. New Blog title for your consideration. Running Man Technogeek.

It was good to know you too! Yes, you are most certainly hooked! Agree with Chris, no longer a Wannabe. Have a good weekend!

Andrew…you can’t just do a “5 Things Thursday”. It’s “Three Things Thursday” (Note the “TH” is consistent throughout all Three words). A “5 Things Thursday” is borderline reckless. It’s simply not allowed and if we weren’t so close I’d report you to the blogging authorities. Also it is for this reason that I have only read up to #3.

#2…dressing for winter runs is tricky and takes some trial-and-error. I check the temperature when I leave and try to note what I was wearing and if I was too hot or cold for my run. It usually takes me a few weeks to get it right. But then I know exactly what to wear for what run in what temperature.

To be very very clear, 42 degrees is COLD!! I haven't seen that in over a year. (Phoenix will do that to you)

If the end of the world is near, I'm cashing in my 401k and going to vegas! Yahoooo
