FYTO Virtual 5K Race Report

Race day starts with a good breakfast at 9 am (1 cup of oatmeal, 1 banana, 1 teaspoon of maple syrup)

Weather report: 18°F heavy snow to 6 inches, feels like: 5°F Wind: N 11 m/h ... looking out the front door it doesn't look much more than 5 1/2 inches.

Throw my gear on, pin my race bib on, and snap a picture of the dumbass that going to run in this weather.

Warm up for a mile or so.

Am I warm yet?

Nope ...

It did warm up a bit (no that's not a police helicopter search light)

It got absolutely balmy!  (Had to put some spf 45 on)

Got a little lost, but there was no difference between the rock hard grass and the tar path - both were covered with snow

Made the turn for the finish line and was moved by a pretty flag waving in the pines:

Had some difficulty running quickly in the 6 inch snow.

(P.S. Never look at your feet when you should be looking straight ahead)

But when I got home I checked.  One ... two ... yes the same number of feet I left with ...

Total time 5k: 42:43.

OMG, you gotta send that last video to America's Funniest Videos T.V. show, you may win some money.

Dude, seriously, you actually CHOOSE to live in that weather? You do know that Canada is a free country, right? You can actually live elsewhere.

Wait, did you wipe out?

Fabulous WINTER running! You done good! I'm embarrassed I ran inside now... I did watch a flake or two fall during my run, though :-)

Yeah, I looked outside and thought "I don't think so!" Long trek on the treadmill for me. You're much better than I am!

Do Canadians put maple syrup on everything? Just wonderin'.

If Adam doesn't give you some sort of medal of honor, along with a 90" plasma HD ready TV, I will! (minus the tv - I'm just a poor coach).

This makes me really glad I live in Texas. Congrats on a great run - just heading out in that seemed like quite the accomplishment.

You deserve major points for running in that!

I giggled when you called that guy in the picture a dumbass. ;)

And I really enjoyed the presentation of your breakfast... particularly the ring of bananas around the oatmeal!

And to think I was complaining about my running conditions this morning....makes my run look like Florida weather.

Cynthia O'H said...

Nothing like an easy run to start the weekend, eh?
When I was out during my 13 miles, I kept thinking it would be great to have a camera with me - but I'm not one to click and run.
Good report. Fun times!

Love it! And to think, I'm cowering here in Southern California because it won't make it to 60F today....

Adam said...

LOVE IT!!! That was an AMAZING run. A few things:

1. You should be an oatmeal artist
2. Your face still looks skinny packed with snow
3. If you lose a toe to frostbite, make sure you post pictures!

Dash said...

Andrew, you are awesome, you better win for trekking out in that weather!! Nice job, that Kudos sign must have been put up just for you!!!

wendy said...

Lol! I LOVE this! Are you sure you aren't in my backyard, because that it is what it looks like here... 18 degrees in January? That is a HEATWAVE!!!! Possibly why you are having all of the snow? It was 7 below yesterday here with the wind and I saw a guy in shorts and a sweatshirt. Great run, btw!

Nej said...

Awesome!!!! Our snow just started this morning before I headed out....so the accumulation isn't much yet. Pretty sure I'll be running in 6-8" on Tuesday am. Way to get out there!!!!!!!!!!!

ajh said...

Funny report! I had to check it out since Dash commented in her report that you and I had it the coldest. It looks colder and snowier where you are. Today was the same temp as yesterday here but felt much colder! We are tough!

ONEHOURIRONMAN said...

Thanks, I needed a pick me up after my 42F ride today...

Teamarcia said...

That's what I call a character builder. Nice job pushing through tough conditions!

Great race report. I love that you took pictures! I had to laugh out loud when I watched the last video!!! I'm glad you're okay.

Anne-Marie said...

Love the photo-blogging! Running in snow is hard, but esp 6 inches - that's insane. Way to go!

Rae said...

Wow that is a lot of snow! I can't see your videos at work, so I"ll have to check them later!

Lindsey said...

OMG Andrew!!! You're a rockstar.

The Green Girl said...

Is it still considered 'chicked' when you were running and slipping in snow and I was cruising down The Strip?

Tara said...

Oh good grief, the snow in the beard says it all! Then I watched the video.....bahahahaaa!

Good for you for getting out there and gettin 'er done in all that snow!
