I need Help!

I got this picture from our class manager - convocation is in 3 weeks.  Apparently a framed one is free with the deal!  Sweet!  I was part of a fantastic class.  See if you can spot the guy that fooled them all!

=====

I want to run a 10k race as part of my training on Sunday October 17th, at 9:30 am.  It's the Waterloo 5k/10k Oktoberfest Run.

I have two points that I need everyone's expert help on:

  1. How do I convince, the super-intelligent and all-round-awesome Coach Parker that I can do my Saturday long run (6 miles for Elizabeth) on a Sunday - during the race? (After I spent 22 emails telling her I need Sunday's off from training to spend time with my family!)
  2. If I'm allowed to enter it, do I choose the age category or the weight category to compete for medals?  My age group would be 45-49, and my weight would be 200+ lbs.
=====

Thanks for all the recipes - I especially like the stew with 5% alcohol.  I had 3 bowls!  hiccup!

Switching a day can't be a big deal...what division would you prefer? Don't think that matters past what your gut is telling you.

Listen to your coach or your gonna get benched :)

I'm with Patrick - switch away!!

Go 200+ --- but I like big men, just sayin'. ;)

Thats easy, candlesticks make a nice anniversary present, and enter the weight category... the age groupers in that range are FAST!.

Hmmmm, your coach should probably encourage the speed work. You did embark on the advice of a coach so I don't think it would be good to not listen (this coming from me?! YUP haha).

Do what the coach says though, they have experience on what it takes to achieve your goals :)

As for if you get the A OK to race, not sure man. Usually 200+ are the weight lifting guys but for a 10k you might have a better chance with the 200+ guys.

Good luck regardless!

I agree with the first comment... switching days shouldn't be a big deal. The age group is a tough one... there are some FAST uns in that demographic.

Good coaches know things pop uo in life and expect it from their clients, she will be easy on you.

AG or Cydlesdale, tough choice

I switch up long run days all the time. If you want to be like me, I say do it.

Training plans aren't written in stone, and I'm sure the coach knows that. She'll be cool with it.

I think coach will be ok with you switching days but you didn't really say what your long run is, is the 10k within the distance assigned by Coach P.

At the rate you are lossing, you are not going to be a clydesdale much longer, so you may want to put it to some quick use.

EMZ - stop hittin' on Andrew...he's married.

It's one day. Just one day...and you could say that it IS for your family. They watching you race. As far as which category to choose...go where most of teh ladies are.

Don't tell her, she's in Colorado. Just write up your race report using Saturday for everything, she'll never know. I'd go 200+, as mentioned above, that's usually a competitive age group.

Follow your instincts, Only you would know what is best for you. I trust you will choose the right one. =)

I agree- go with the weight! Some of those guys in that group are super fast!! :)

Yay for a 10K race! That is awesome! I say go for it! I've switched my long run days. Do it! Do it! Do it!

You guys are thoroughly entertaining... I used to just read blog posts, now I have to scroll through all the comments too to get the complete experience.

Switch the day and the 200+ for sure.

Because you're a fellow MBA now, I'll give you an insider tip: try bribing Coach Parker with some Coconut Cream Pie Larabars.
And enter in the weight category.

Tell Kovas that you already sent me the link to the race and therefore I know it's on Sunday. Tisk Tisk for lying. But I do take bribes...and it ain't in Larabar form.

I'm with everyone else - enter the weight category! Switch the long run days and run your 10K - it will make your weekend better :)

How much convincing does your coach need? Just explain that its what you want to do. If coach says no, then don't do it. That's why you got a coach..for guidance

Enter as a clyde if you want. But if you don't. Plan to remain one and/or don't care too much about the podium, enter as an age grouper. I'm no help really. Lol

In response to your comment about my car - I could not take part of the cash for clunkers deal last year because my current car gets 29 miles to the gallon and is actually pretty efficient.

Lindsey said...

I think she'll let you switch. I'd do the clydesdale category - wait - are results online from last year? Sometimes that'll give you an idea of what category is better to be in, sometimes the clydesdale/athena groups are smaller and give you a better chance. (Or there are people in that group that are just over the limit and blow everybody away.)

Oh crap, I don't know! I would just do what you feel comfy doing:) Switching training plans is something that goes along with having a life.

About the half marathon thing....my first half was in freaking January of 2010! I live in Minnesota:) I have done nine half marathons this year so far. I have one coming up at the end of the month. I would never tell people to run this many...I ended up with GI issues and fatigue because I didn't give my body enough time to rest and recover. I ran this first marathon with six weeks of training consisting of three runs a week. Runing all of those halfs gave me a great base to start with:) I learned that I don't need to run six times a week to prepare for a marathon:)

Take care Andrew!

I'm sure you can switch your days - go for it! I'm not sure if you should compete by age or weight. I originally thought 'weight - hands down!' but then realized my husband is a really fit 201 and would probably go by weight just to win. You might have better luck by age! ;)
PS - glad you liked the stew!

Andrew,
I'm struggling to find the "one that fooled them all". What I did notice was that you have the best tie of the bunch... by far.

Also, thanks for speaking-up for family time. So, so important.

So, since I am SOOOO far behind on everything, I have to know - what did coach say? I'm going to meet her face to face on Saturday, if you want me to put in a good word I could :)
